SECTION 1

MISSION, PHILOSOPHY & PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

BEACH TO BROADWAY (B2B)

Long Bay Theatre Summer Conservatory

Beach to Broadway is a conservatory-style training program designed to develop disciplined, skilled, and independent young theatre artists through professional instruction, rehearsal, and performance.

The program combines intensive training in acting, singing, and dance with the rehearsal process of a fully realized theatrical production.

Our goal is not simply to produce performances.

Our goal is to develop performers.

Every class, rehearsal, correction, coaching session, and performance opportunity should contribute to a student’s artistic growth, personal responsibility, and understanding of professional theatre practices.

OUR MISSION

The mission of Beach to Broadway is to provide young performers with a professional-level training environment that emphasizes:

  • Artistic growth

  • Personal responsibility

  • Collaboration

  • Discipline

  • Creativity

  • Professionalism

  • Storytelling

  • Performance excellence

Students should leave the program with stronger skills, stronger habits, and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a performer and a member of an ensemble.

OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

Beach to Broadway is not a recreational camp.

While students should enjoy the experience, entertainment is not the primary objective.

Training is the primary objective.

We believe students are capable of achieving far more than they are often asked to achieve.

For that reason, we establish clear expectations, maintain consistent standards, and teach students to work within a structured rehearsal environment.

Students are challenged to:

  • Listen actively

  • Take direction

  • Apply corrections

  • Develop discipline

  • Collaborate effectively

  • Take ownership of their work

  • Respect the rehearsal process

  • Perform with confidence and independence

We believe young performers rise to the level of expectations placed upon them.

THE BEACH TO BROADWAY STANDARD

Every instructional decision should support three priorities:

1. Student Safety

Nothing is more important than the physical and emotional safety of our students.

No artistic goal, rehearsal objective, or production concern takes priority over student safety.

2. Student Growth

The educational experience is more important than the final performance.

Students should leave camp with greater skills and understanding than when they arrived.

3. Program Excellence

Beach to Broadway strives to maintain standards that reflect professional theatre practices while remaining age-appropriate and educationally sound.

WHAT WE ARE TEACHING

We are not simply teaching students how to perform in a show.

We are teaching students how professional performers:

  • Rehearse

  • Collaborate

  • Prepare

  • Listen

  • Learn

  • Take notes

  • Apply notes

  • Solve problems

  • Support an ensemble

  • Tell stories

Students should gain skills that extend beyond the current production.

CONSERVATORY EXPECTATIONS

Faculty should approach instruction with the understanding that students are capable of meaningful artistic growth.

We do not lower standards to avoid challenges.

We teach students how to meet those standards.

This requires:

  • Consistency

  • Accountability

  • Patience

  • Repetition

  • Clear communication

  • Professional expectations

Faculty should maintain high expectations while providing the support necessary for student success.

THE ROLE OF THE FACULTY

Faculty members are responsible for more than teaching content.

Faculty members establish culture.

Students should see adults who demonstrate:

  • Professionalism

  • Preparation

  • Respect

  • Discipline

  • Collaboration

  • Integrity

Faculty members are expected to model the behavior we ask students to demonstrate.

Students learn from what they see as much as from what they are taught.

THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT

Students are expected to:

  • Arrive prepared

  • Participate fully

  • Respect instructors

  • Respect fellow students

  • Follow directions

  • Take responsibility for their work

  • Remain engaged throughout the day

  • Support the success of the ensemble

Students should understand that artistic growth requires effort, focus, and commitment.

OUR COMMITMENT

Beach to Broadway is committed to providing a safe, disciplined, positive, and professionally run environment where students can grow as performers and as people.

The final performance is important.

The training is the purpose.

The growth of the student is the measure of success.
